This week, we are featuring Thurston Wolfe Wines. Our Wine Department wrote up some notes about our offerings to share with you all.
Thurston Wolfe is a small family winery owned by Wade Wolfe and Becky Yeaman, specializing in unique red & white table and dessert wines. Grapes are sourced from growers located in the Horse Heaven Hills and Yakima Valley AVA’s at sites best suited to the individual varieties. These sites and grower relationships were developed through Wade’s extensive contacts and knowledge of the region dating back to the late 1970’s.
Started in 1987, Thurston Wolfe was first located in the historic Old City Hall on North Front Street in Yakima. Thurston Wolfe moved to Prosser in 1996 to be more centrally located in the industry and its grape sources. A new custom-designed winery was completed and occupied in January 2006 in Prosser Vintner’s Village at 588 Cabernet Court off Exit 80 of Interstate 82.
Through the years the winery has focused on high-quality rare wines, creating a unique market niche. Thurston Wolfe today makes over 7,000 cases of wine, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Dr. Wolfe’s Family Red (Zinfandel & Petite Sirah blend), PGV (Pinot Gris & Viognier blend) and Touriga Nacional port. All fruit is grown in Washington State. Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Viognier were planted at the Zephyr Ridge Vineyard near Paterson in 1998 and Touriga Nacional at the Lonesome Springs Vineyard near Benton City in 1998.
Pinot Gris Viognier
Tropical fruit aromas with light and delicate scent of rose petal. Refreshing flavors of bright tangerine and mango with a soft body and crisp finish.
JTW's Blend
The 2019 JTW’s Blend is Thurston Wolfe’s proprietary blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (50%) and Zinfandel (50%), creating a rare wine with dark fruit aromas (cherry, cassis, strawberry, and plum) and oak spice (vanilla and allspice) and a rich, full-bodied finish.
Dr. Wolfe's Family Red
Dr. Wolfe’s Family Red is the signature red blend of Thurston Wolfe Winery. Zinfandel (62 %), Petite Sirah (29%), and Lemberger (9%) make up this fusion of varietals.
Touriga Nacional Port
Barrel-aged for 16 months. 19% alcohol, 9% residual sugar. Aromas of marionberry, chocolate, and coffee with a rich, lingering mouthfeel. Pairs incredibly well with cigars. Great with blue cheese, nuts and sliced pears, and especially chocolate mousse. Barrel-aged for 16 months. 19% alcohol, 9% residual sugar.
